BOD Overview

As the governing body of the GSA, the WLUGSA Board of Directors (BOD) plays an important role in providing direction for the GSA both politically and financially. The BOD also ensures that graduate students are represented within the WLU community and that their issues are addressed.

Board Structure

The Board of Directors will consist of nine members; one Chair and eight Directors. To facilitate communication between our faculties, five of these Directors will be representative of the following faculties: one from Arts, one from Business & Economics, one from Music, one from Social Work and one from Science. The remaining three Director positions will be filled by Directors-at-Large.

The Membership will elect the Chair and three Directors-at-Large at the scheduled Annual General Meeting. They will serve until the end of March the following year. The Membership will also elect ive faculty-specific Directors in September. They will serve until the following September. The procedure for becoming a BOD member is as follows:

  • Interested students complete a nomination package during the nomination period (March or September). The nomication package may include a bio, platform, picture of candidate, and also the signatures of 10 other graduate students (any program, any year) in support of the candidate
  • Once all nomination packages are in, the CRO (Chief Returning Officer) determines where an election is needed. For example, if more students are interested than the number of vacancies in any faculty there would need to be an election, or if more than three candidates come forward in March.
  • If an election is needed, candidates campaign to students in their faculty for September and campaign to the entire membership for March
  • The highest vote getter(s) in each faculty are elected to serve for one year in the September election, the three highest vote getters at large in March
  • If there are vacancies after the faculty specific vacancies are filled with students from those faculties, the highest vote getters OUTSIDE of the faculty who did not successfully win a seat in their faculty can fill the now vacancy at-large. (in other words, if no one from Arts shows up, and there are 5 Business students, we would fill the Arts vacancies with Business students, once the Business spots are full).

Our system works to ensure the availability of diversity in Directors from different faculties - it does not mandate that diversity, since vacancies can be filled from outside the faculty. This works to ensure that each faculty has the opportunity for representation. Our Board is not voiced by faculty, but by the good of graduate students as one singular voice at Laurier.

You may contact a Director regarding any GSA concerns or issues you would like brought to the attention of the GSA. Though we endeavor to provide representation to every Faculty on the Board, every Director is a representative of the graduate student body at large. You are welcome to contact any Director, regardless of their Faculty.

All GSA members are welcome to attend our monthly Board meetings.

Hi!  I’m a second-time Laurier student, working towards a Ph.D. in Social Work.  This past year I sat on the GSA Board of Directors and am thrilled to be the Chairperson for the 2013-2014 year.  When I’m not at school, I’m with my wonderful husband, Chris, and cat, Orson, or spending time with family and friends.  I love the arts, traveling, sports, nature, and summertime!
