Position Overview

The Faculty Representative is a part of the GSA Student Leadership Team, reporting directly to the Faculty Representative Coordinator. This position is responsible for connecting with graduate students within the faculty through pre-determined outreach initiatives, identifying any barriers to graduate student success and bringing them to the attention of the Faculty Representative Coordinator. The position will also be responsible for fostering partnerships and a sense of community within their faculty by creating welcoming spaces for graduate students to provide their feedback.

This role embodies the GSA’s commitment to ensuring graduate student voices are heard and graduate students feel supported, valued and empowered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Student Engagement: Facilitate connections among graduate students through GSA outreach initiatives (e.g., townhalls, orientation programming, GSA events).

  • Advocacy and Support: Identify barriers to graduate student success and communicate them to the Faculty Representative Coordinator to address.

  • Community Building: Cultivate a sense of community within the faculty and GSA, strengthening partnerships to improve the overall graduate student experience.

  • Commitment to Care: Act as a liaison between the GSA and the faculty, approach work from a caring and compassionate lens and help foster an equitable, inclusive and safe environment for all graduate students and staff.

  • Committee Involvement: Serve on committees within the faculty and various Laurier committees that require graduate student representation, ensuring the needs and voices of graduate students are effectively advocated for.

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with the Faculty Representative Coordinator and other GSA leadership members to ensure effective communication and a united approach to supporting graduate students.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Laurier graduate student (Master’s or PhD) with a passion for leadership, community-building, and student well-being. Must be a registered graduate student for the full length of the contract.

  • Experience in student advocacy, engagement, or leadership roles with a focus on creating a supportive and inclusive environment where all graduate students feel heard and valued.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to foster meaningful connections, engage with empathy, and collaborate effectively across programs within their faculty.

  • Dedication to student care and well-being, demonstrating a proactive approach to supporting peers, addressing concerns, and advocating for a positive graduate student experience.

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities while maintaining a compassionate, student-centered approach.

Terms of Employment 

Term: August 18th, 2025 until April 30th, 2026 (must be a registered graduate student the entire duration)

Compensation: The position offers an honorarium ($250 upon completion of onboarding/training and up to $1000 for the fall term, $1000 for the winter term, and $500 for the summer term based on participation).

Work Environment 

  • Largely Self-Directed: Requires independent task management while aligning with leadership directives and team priorities

  • Dynamic: Varying demands based on event timelines

  • Occasional After-Hours Work: Some tasks may require evening or weekend availability

  • Work Environment: This position is primarily remote, offering the flexibility to work from home the majority of the time. The successful candidate will be expected to have a reliable internet connection and a suitable workspace to support effective remote work. Day-to-day duties can be performed virtually, occasional in-person attendance at events, council meetings, and organizational gatherings will be required. These in-person commitments are typically scheduled in advance and may involve some local travel. This role requires a balance of independent work and active collaboration with team members and stakeholders in both virtual and physical settings.
