A Brief Overview of Positions Open for Election:

Student positions on Laurier’s Senate and Board provide unique learning & leadership experiences. Through your participation, you can bring the student perspective to these governing bodies and have an impact on the University’s future.

The following is a brief description of the position available for Election during this time. The Elections Team would like to remind Candidates that this is by no means a complete list of responsibilities or a full description of the positions listed below. You are encouraged to do your own research on the Board of Governors webpage before running for election. Serving on the governing bodies of the University:

 As a Governor, you will:

  • Add a student perspective and your own personal experiences and observations to help make decisions

  • Have impact as a role model in the Laurier community

  • Participate in developing and sustaining positive change in campus, local, national and global communities

  • Develop your leadership skills

  • Build meaningful interpersonal relationships

  • Model social responsibility

  • Add to your experiential learning portfolio - Record this involvement on your Co-Curricular Record (CCR)

You are expected to:

  • Attend meetings (dates are set well in advance and attendance is mandatory)

  • Serve on 1-2 committees as well as the Board or Senate

  • Prepare for meetings:

·  RSVP in advance

·  Review materials prior to meeting

·  Come prepared to participate

  • Respect confidentiality of materials and discussion as needed

  • Ask if you don’t understand or need more information

  • When making decisions on behalf of the University, your responsibility is to keep in mind the good of the whole University, not just the interests of current/future students (fiduciary responsibility)

                

WLU Board of Governors

In total, there is one (1) vacancy for an elected graduate student position on the WLU Board of Governors, to be elected for a 2 year term (July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2026).

Candidates who are Indigenous persons, Black persons, and persons of colour (BIPOC), persons with disabilities and/or accessibility needs, all gender identities and expressions and sexual orientations, and people who experience undue harm, economic hardship, and discrimination because of their family status, citizenship and/or immigration status, or size and/or appearance are particularly encouraged to consider running.

 

Important Dates:

Please note that the nomination period has been extended until Thursday, March 7th at 12 pm (Noon) EST and the timeline will be adjusted.

Thursday, February 29th – Nomination Package, Platform and Bio due at 12pm (Noon) EST

Thursday, February 29th at 12pm (Noon) EST – Candidate Information Meeting (if necessary)

February 29th – March 18th – Campaign Period (if necessary)

Polling open from 8am on Monday, March 18th, 2024 until 8pm on March 19th, 2024 (results at 8pm EST)

 

Election Procedure Highlights:

  1. Campaign Meeting – you have the opportunity to form a committee that will be officially recognized by the CRO as your Campaign Team. A full overview of campaign rules and procedures will be reviewed at the candidate information meeting. If you are unable to attend this meeting, you must send a designated agent.

  2. Campaign Spending Limit is $20 including sales tax.

  3. Any classroom speaking must be coordinated through the CRO.

  4. Signs, posters, and notices must be stamped at the GSA Office AND Dean of Students Office and follow all WLU protocols.

  5. You may have a scrutineer present when the CRO tabulates the electronic results.

Nomination Package Components:

The nomination package is due by Thursday, February 29th, 2024 at 12pm (noon) EST by submitting the nomination form. Please ensure that you have all of the components of your Nomination Package complete prior to submitting the form. The components of the Nomination Package are:

1.    Nomination Form – the official nomination form is included below. Failure to complete the form will result in a loss of candidacy.

2.    Short Bio – please provide the GSA with a short biography of yourself relevant to the position (maximum 100 words).

3.    Campaign Platform – please provide the GSA with any specifics of your campaign platform (maximum 250 words).

4.    A digital photo (not mandatory) to be emailed to generalinfo@wlugsa.ca

Your bio, platform, and photo may be published on the GSA website, in GSA emails to the membership, in elections materials, in The Cord, and/or on www.thecord.ca.
