Vice President
Position Overview
Member of the GSA’s all staff team reporting to the President & CEO
Champion and advocate for supports and services related to the wellness and success of all Laurier graduate students
Collaborator with University partners to ensure implementation of supports and services related to the wellness and success of graduate students
Involved in creating ideas for and implementing events, initiatives, and programming for all types of graduate students
Works closely with members of the GSA management team to carry out the mission and vision of the organization
Key stakeholder in the execution of the GSA Annual Plan
Responsibilities
Participate in GSA-designed training
Uphold institutional contracts (Student Affairs Advisory Council and Non-Tuition Fee Protocol) with University partners on behalf of graduate-student interests
Engage in community building and the development of relationships with constituents
Participate in regular all staff team meetings
Hold an understanding of, and advocate for the needs of students with dependents (e.g., child-minding services)
Do research and create briefs in order to pursue evidence based advocacy
Creates and promotes a positive, diverse work environment
Reviews materials to promote ongoing GSA initiatives
Creates and conducts presentations in collaboration with staff
Builds, expands, and strengthens mutually beneficial partnerships founded on ethical reciprocity to advance the mandate of the GSA
Serves as a spokesperson for the corporation in the absence of the President
Serves as President & CEO if determined through the Emergency Succession Plan
Prepares a transition report for the incoming Vice President
Committee participation (commitments may change as required):
Member of the Student Affairs Advisory Committee
Member of the Non-Tuition Fee Protocol Committee
Other committee vacancies as assigned by the President & CEO (e.g., Laurier Board of Governors)
Desired Skills And Experience
Working knowledge of corporate documents
Ability to exercise sound judgment
Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism, transparency, and accountability
Commitment to inclusion, diversity, exclusion and accessibility (IDEA) and Anti-Racism, Anti-Oppression, and Anti Discrimination (AR/AO/AD) best practices and have or must be willing to receive training in these areas
Must be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of application
Ability to effectively chair and facilitate meetings
Knowledge of government policies related to education and its impact on members
Knowledge of not-for-profit corporations act (ONCA)
Interpersonal skills required to effectively interact with staff, volunteers, members, and the University Community
Past participation with the GSA, and knowledge of GSA policies and procedures is an asset
Experience working in a University environment is an asset
Experience managing volunteers and staff is an asset
Terms of Employment
Term of office: May 1st, 2024 until April, 30th 2025/6 (training from April 15, 2024– April 30th, 2021)
Hours: Based on up to 20 hours per week.
Compensation: $27.50/hour
Must be an enrolled student the entire duration of the term.
Training:
Participate in GSA onboarding and training
Participate in sensitivity training
Complete AODA training
Complete Health and Safety training
Work Environment
Self-directed position: flexibility in determining some working hours
High amount of unexpected work and time demands
Must be able to cope with the multitude of demands required of the position
Work is occasionally required during weekends and evenings
Work will take place primarily in a collaborative office environment, at home on-line when needed, as well as a variety of event locations around campus
Efficient use of Google Suite (docs, slides, sheets, forms, etc.) and email (Gmail) required to fulfill many communication functions
Use of general office equipment: Mac computer, photocopier, fax machine, etc.
